Advancements in Patient Selection for Treatment of Non-Small Lung Cancer with Iressa (gefitinib) utilizing Biodesix’s ProTS- Marker®
Bioanalysis Technology to be presented at the Annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting
Steamboat Springs, Colorado Sunday, June 4th, - Biodesix, Inc.announced today an important
EGFR-TKI study being presented by Dr. Ben Solomon on Sunday June 4th 2006, during the annual meeting of
the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) which runs June 2-6 in Atlanta, GA. The study focuses
on selecting patients for specific treatment regimens based on molecular-level phenotypical characteristics.
In collaboration with researchers from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (Dr. Paul Bunn Jr.) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Dr. David Carbone)
Biodesix has developed a mass spectrometry based test using pre-treatment serum samples
(from patients who have undergone chemotherapy treatment and before treatment with gefitinib)
that aims at the selection of those non-small cell lung cancer patients who would derive clinical
benefit from gefitinib in second line therapy. During this research it has been demonstrated that
through the use of Biodesix's proprietary software, ProTS Marker, it is possible to analyze serum
mass spectra generated across multiple institutions with high reproducibility. Furthermore,
Biodesix's algorithms were able to determine that these spectra contain relevant and specific
information that may allow for the prospective stratification of patients according to their
response to gefitinib. In the studied sample sets almost all of the patients who would derive
clinical benefit from gefitinib treatment could be selected before treatment. This test, using
only a few microliters of peripheral blood, has been validated in a blinded manner on an
independent sample set, predicts benefit at least as well as other published outcome predictors,
and even works in the subset of patients with squamous cell cancers.
About Biodesix -Biodesix is a pioneer in enabling
personalized medicine using mass spectrometry based molecular diagnostics.
By rapidly and cost-effectively analyzing the concurrent presence of markers of many proteins in patient
samples, Biodesix's clinically proven products improve the ability of physicians to provide treatment tailored specifically to the patient.
Biodesix's scientists are applying its unique and proprietary data analysis techniques to isolate signatures which can help in disease management,
pharmacokinetic profiling, patient stratification and choice of patient therapy. Biodesix is a life sciences company founded in 2005 by several
former senior pharmaceutical executives and key scientists to solve the challenges of simple and reproducible mass spectroscopy data analysis of
biological materials.
Iressa is a trademark of AstraZeneca.
Biodesix offers analysis and consultative services for clients wanting to evaluate our services or have
specific proteomics mass spectrometry analysis performed by our world class experts.
Projects are confidential and cost effective utilizing Biodesix’s proprietary platform.
