World Lung Cancer Awareness Day: Why Our Work Matters

Each year on August 1, we recognize World Lung Cancer Awareness Day. For many, it is an opportunity to learn more about a disease that continues to impact millions of patients and families around the world. For those of us at Biodesix, it is far more personal. It is a reminder of why our company was founded, why our mission matters, and why the work each of us does every day has the opportunity to change lives.

Twenty years ago, Biodesix was built on a bold vision: to transform patient care through innovative diagnostics and deliver clinical answers that matter when they matter most. Two decades later, that vision remains just as meaningful and just as urgent. Every test we develop, every sample we process, every healthcare provider we support, every partnership we build, and every scientific breakthrough we pursue is connected to one goal—to help patients receive the right answers at the right time, so healthcare providers can make more informed and personalized patient care decisions with confidence.

Lung cancer remains one of the world’s greatest healthcare challenges and the #1 cause of cancer-related deaths, claiming nearly as many American lives each year as breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Behind every diagnosis is a person whose life has changed in an instant. A family facing uncertainty. Loved ones searching for hope. While we may never meet most of the patients whose lives our work touches, we should never underestimate the impact we have on their journey. That is both an extraordinary responsibility and an incredible privilege.

On World Lung Cancer Awareness Day, I find myself reflecting not only on the healthcare providers, patients, and life sciences partners we serve, but also on the remarkable Biodesix team and workplace culture that make our mission possible.

Every day, I see passion, expertise, resilience, and commitment to our mission. Whether you work in our laboratories, support healthcare providers, advance our science, develop new technologies, partner with biopharmaceutical companies, or enable our business behind the scenes, your contributions matter because they ultimately improve patient care.

As we also celebrate the Biodesix 20th anniversary this year, I am incredibly proud of how far we have come. Hundreds of teammates helped build this company into what it is today. Together, we have advanced precision diagnostics, expanded access to innovative testing, and helped physicians make more informed decisions for countless patients.

And while we should celebrate these accomplishments, I believe our greatest impact is still ahead of us. At Biodesix, we are uniquely positioned to help shape the future—not only because of the innovations we are developing, but because of the people (YOU!) and the team who make those innovations possible.

To me, World Lung Cancer Awareness Day is ultimately about hope:

  • hope that greater awareness leads to earlier detection,
  • hope that innovation leads to more confident clinical decisions,
  • hope that scientific discovery continues to improve patient outcomes, and
  • hope that one day, together, we can help create a future where far fewer families hear the words, “you have lung cancer”.

Thank you for everything you do each day. Thank you for believing in our mission. And thank you for helping ensure that every answer we provide has the potential to make a meaningful difference for healthcare providers, life sciences partners, patients, and the families who are counting on us.

Together, we are not simply offering diagnostic solutions, we are helping build a future where every patient has a better chance.
